Cotton Kurtis for Women

A kurti earns its place by being the one garment you can put on without making any other decision. It works over a churidar, over palazzos, over jeans, and it needs no second piece to look finished. The kurtis here are cut in the two silhouettes that do the most work across a week — A-line, which releases from the bust and skims everything below it, and straight-cut, which falls in a clean vertical line and layers under a jacket without bulking at the hip.

The prints are hand block printed, which is worth explaining because the phrase gets used loosely. In hand block printing a carved wooden block is inked and struck onto the cloth by hand, one repeat at a time, across the length of the fabric. The registration is never machine-perfect, and that is the point — the tiny variations between repeats are how you tell a hand-printed cloth from a screen-printed imitation of one. The Rust Handblock Printed A-Line Kurta is cut in 100% cotton with a kali-panelled flare; the Ivory Block Print Floral Straight Kurta takes the same craft in a fluid viscose that drapes closer to the body.

On fit, the two measurements that decide everything are total length and slit height, and they matter more than the label on the garment. A piece that ends at mid-thigh with deep side slits behaves like a kurta and wants a bottom that reads as a deliberate pair. One that ends at the high hip with short slits behaves like a top and sits over jeans without looking unfinished. Both lengths are represented here, and both are cut with 3/4 sleeves and a round neck — the combination that stays comfortable in heat without feeling exposed.

Sizes run XS to XXL, and every piece is machine washable. If you are after a shorter, more Western-leaning shape, the cotton tunic tops collection carries peplum, wrap and boxy silhouettes; for a matched kurta-and-pant pairing, see the kurta sets collection.
